George Laurent, a successful TV anchor, and his wife Anne, a publisher, one day receives a surveillance tap, which shows simply the exteriors of their apartment and nothing more. Video cassettes follow, which at first seems to be innocent pranks of a child, but later includes a horrifying child drawing with a child with blood dripping mouth. Since there was no mortal dangers indicated, the police persons hesitate to take any immediate steps and the family have to live a haunted life. But certain part of the clips, triggers in Laurent’s mind, some unusual incidents happened during his childhood, when the protagonist, through his compulsion, evicted an Arab boy living in his house, and of whom, his parents have got a plan to adopt, which he detested much, and with his crookedness the boy was evicted from the premises to a far away children’s home. The boy’ s name was Majid. Laurent suspects that this Majid is doing these pranks just to terrorize him and thus to take his revenge. Eventually one of the video clips lead him to the low rent apartment, where Majid lives. Majid reveals that he knew nothing about the tape, but also states about his disgust that such a person have visited his scanty surroundings. Incidences follow, such as the disappearance of Laurent’s son, the arrest of Majid and his son, return of Laurent's son after a brief stay at his friend’s house, release of Majid, irrational behavior of Laurent’s son, towards his parents. Etc. etc. And one day Majid invited Laurent, to his apartment, to discuss the matters, and when he was at his house, he committed suicide, by cutting his throat in the other’s presence. Laurent was really shocked, but returns home to have a sleeping pill induced sleep. At the end we see Anne, waiting for her son at the doorsteps of the school, and we find her departing with her son.
Haneke is not portraying a family tragedy, but directing us towards something else. The first question that every viewer will ask is this ‘why a small crime(!) committed during one’s childhood, haunts one when he is an adult? All of us should have gone through such phases in our life, but none of us remembers and none of us regrets about those happenings. Then why Laurent? Haneke answers in other sequences. In one, we see a TV program depicting the deployment of military during Iraq war and the subsequent co=ordination between the first world, to obliterate a small nation. The answer lies there. We are reminded of the imperialist past of France, their forceful occupation of Algeria, the tortures, massacres, etc. etc. that every French man want to forget. It is the duty of a writer, a poet, or a film maker, to remind us of the atrocities that we have committed in the past and only through such reminders that we can refrain from such heinous acts in future. Thanks Haneke
