Technology is for mans progress, to make life more easy, to make it more perfect, to make it more beautiful, or to make a situation that will enrich the life of the whole of the living beings . the above preferences may differ to a great extend according to the attitude of the individual. still at present i am elaborating only about the first point for certain reasons, one among them being my wife's happiness for having an easy atmosphere in her kitchen. unlike her ancestors, who were to wake early in the morning to have a clean wash of the dumped cloths in the waste bin, to hurry to make the grocery change its color and properties to make it edible, and in the meantime, run to the corners of the compound to have the call of nature relieved, to sweat in the scorching sun etc. etc., she is a bit more lucky, because now she can do almost all of the above tasks in a simple sitting, even for the shit she should not have to move farther.
STILL OUR ANCESTORS WERE HAPPY
AND SOMETIMES BETTER THAN US
even now my wife can do all the above routines, without the aid of machines, by simply discarding a fan, a washing machine or an air conditioner. but she cannot think of such a situation because a permanent acquaintance with those machines, had incapacitated her. leisure is a malicious disease, and sometime contagious. it propagates from your's to your neighbors house.
out of the above cited appliances, i prefer to speak about some particular items one by one. since the thoughts in this regard were not premeditated, some more instruments may sprout during the course of this essay. but at present i am speaking only about the two out of them.
REWINDING CLOCK
what was bad with a rewinding clock. do not speak . just think about it. when i was born , my mother ascertained my entry time, simply by referring to a wall mounted clock, which she had to rewind every morning to make it work. the rewinding is a simple process. you are to mount yourself on a chair to level yourself with the instrument. then a key was inserted in a tiny hole in the body of the machine, and a clock wise motion of this key was the only thing required. just a two minute work. when i became tall enough to catch with its height i started the rewinding process, until on one day one of my relatives presented me with an electronic clock, working on a battery. from that day on wards, time became an easy gadget in my house. no winding or not even a minute of thought about this instrument. that easiness made us happy. a machine which worked with the clock wise movement of my fingers, now worked well with a small piece that we called battery, which we had to replace once in a year or so. our daily works were now transferred to the remotest corners of this universe, where a group of people toils for us to make this battery. a displacement of work or sometimes a simplification of work.
AUTOMATIC WATCH
the time of the rewinding clock was also the time of the rewinding watches, with the simple difference of the periodicity of rewinding. here it became once in a week instead of once in everyday. in the case of a clock , having a heavy instrument above your head, and requiring your daily help to make it functioning may seem to be a boring task. but what was the fault with this automatic watch. you are not to rewind. it will work simply with a shaking of your hand. (in a country where a golden shake hand means, termination of work, here an instruments starts to work with shaking hands. hats off). but the automatic watch faded. why an instrument which reined in an interim period from the death of a rewinding watch up to the time when our latest electronic watch was introduced just faded without even leaving a trace of its existence. what was its fault. like in the former case, here also the only difference occurred was a mere shift of labor from one place to another sometimes making labor more easy.
in the above cited examples we can readily see the fact that man had discarded one thing (in the case of the wall clock) simply for avoiding the daily movement of his hand only for a few minutes. he preferred electrical energy to mechanical energy. but he had to pay price for his lavishness. electrical energy was unnecessarily expended upon the lavishly available mechanical energy. in the case of other (the automatic watch) it was just divorced without any reason.
