the two spectacular trees:-
1. in 'the sacrifice' by' 'Andrei Tarkovsky' .
in the opening sequence, an aged journalist Alexander, and a mute little boy 'little man' plants a tree on a barren hilly area. Alexander recites the story of a monk, who has planted a tree on a similar hill years before, and who requests his student, to water it at two exact times in the morning and evening. the boy starts his endeavor, doing the laborious task of ascending and descending for many many years, and finally one early morning while ascending to do his routine job, he found that the tree has blossomed.
ANY GOOD ACT, REPEATED DAILY AT EXACT TIMES WITHOUT OBSTRUCTION, LIKE A RITUAL, WILL EVENTUALLY CHANGE THE WORLD (Alexander's observation)
2. in 'landscape in the mist' by theo angelopoulos:-
infatuated with the father figure situated somewhere in a foreign country, Voula, and Alexander seeks him out, lonely and helplessly, which in someway was a futile attempt from a child's perspective. any way they crosses the boundary, and in the misty landscape they witness a lone tree afar. Eleni Karaindrou's adagio follow them. in the final run we see them merging with the trunk of the tree.
(Tarkovsky died at the age of 54 of lung cancer. it is believed that his over exposure to chemicals, during the filming of 'Stalker' caused his drastic end. it was in in 1984)
(theo angelopoulos met with an accident during the year 2012. he was 76)
